Scout Showcase, Spring 2021
As the semester was coming to the end, the Foundry Scouts were not just thinking of the end of final exams and the warm weather to come. Many were thinking of the upcoming Scout Showcase, an art show put on each semester by the Scouts, or student employees, of the Weissman Foundry. Each semester the Scouts create some incredible pieces designed not just for aesthetics, but many are functional finished works designed to be used day-by-day.
Below you can find a selection of the works presented, followed by the description provided by each artist. All of the pieces below were created in the Foundry, many using the tools that we train the BOW community on. We hope you enjoy the pieces below, and look forward to hosing a larger show in the Fall!

There's more than what meets the eye when looking at these masks. At the start of the pandemic, when masks were hard to come by, I jumped into sewing for the first time in nearly 5 years. I've created at least 4 iterations of masks before coming to this final design, and I'm incredibly proud that I was able to create something that was helpful for myself, family, and friends.
Created by Jonathan Griffiths
This piece, constructed of laser cut cardboard, was inspired by bathymetric maps of lake and river beds. When combined together the finished pieces showcase a depth that separates the individuals, creating an inverted island.
Created by Trae James
This was an artwork I created using various digital media. The piece was inspired by my favorite show, Rick and Morty. I used pictures of myself then turned them into drawings using Adobe Illustrator. The piece combines the use of the DSLR camera and iPhone cameras, which were used for differing reasons. The piece represents my creative journey at the Foundry and how I often spend late nights working on my passions. So the Foundry literally forced me to "show myself what I've got!"

IOT Prosthetic
SLA Plastic, 3D Printer
This piece was created using the Stratasys 3D printer. It is a prototype for an IOT device project. I do not have the Microbit circuit board or sensors with me, but essentially, I designed a load bearing prosthetic leg that helps recent amputees transition into using prosthetics. This limb collects real time data of the acceleration (in micro g’s) of the knee joint on an XYZ axis and the joint’s angle relative to the standing position of the prosthetic. Using this data, the prosthetic will correct itself if the patient’s data is outside of the relevant walking range (to prevent instability while walking). I also designed a digital platform to display the data so that in theory, a protestician can tailor their therapy specifically to different patients.

Toothless Lamp
Acrylic, Wood
Made out of hollowed out wood and multiple acrylic pieces, this lamp was created because I cannot see in the dark and did not want to pay $50 for it online. I might have a slightly unhealthy obsession with Toothless,,,,, Shoutout to Aarushi for giving me her unwanted fairy lights so I didn't have to buy LED strips, Simon for helping me hollow out the wood with the jigsaw, and Jonathan because, well do I even need to tell you? Ignore the acrylic glue literally burning through the black acrylic. It was an aesthetic choice,,,

Kintsugi
Pottery and Acrylic Paint
This artwork is meant to replicate the Japanese artform of kintsugi. By filling in the cracks of broken pottery with gold lacre, it is meant to demonstrate that your flaws are what make you beautiful.

College Coasters
Plywood, PLA Plastic
Functional coasters designed (with much help from Jonathan) for my best friends from high school. The crest of each of their respective colleges/universities has been emblazoned on each of their coasters along with their names. A simple gift that thought and effort was put into however the gifts are also light and small enough for them to carry in their suitcases across the country.
Clarissa Lingga
The Haven - Foundry Platform Revamp
Acrylic paint, Polycrylic Sealer
An artwork sketched by Clarissa and Mia using 2B pencil and was then painted by Ilayda, Mia, Clarissa and Simon over the course of 2 weeks. The artwork was then sealed using polycrylic to ensure that the meticulous work would be protected for years to come.

The Foundry Poem
Creative Writing
A creative space for disruptive innovation is inspired by the Foundry, what we can do here, and the potential it holds for all of us! My hope here is to inspire you to use this space and take more action and is an open invitation to join our community.

Utopia is Now
Motion Picture, created on PremierePro
A video poem inspired by Martin Luther King's quote on progress, obstacles and finding the city of our dreams. My philosophical twist to this shows why the city of our dreams or the Utopia we seek is not an unattainable future, but rather a place in the now that we can experience and in which we can be!
