Scout Showcase, Spring 2023

Each semester, we ask our student employees (the Scouts) to create something as an example of the types of work that can be created in our spaces. This semester, we have a fantastic collection of pieces that range from those made in the Woodshop, to those created on canvases. We hope that the following collection of designs sparks a little creativity in your own world, and helps you with your next creation while in the Foundry.

You can find a selection of the works presented, followed by the description provided by each artist below. All of the pieces below were created in the Foundry, many using the tools that we train the BOW community on. We hope you enjoy the pieces below, and look forward to seeing what you create!

Wooden Gift by Shirley Trivedi

This exquisite wooden box is a true masterpiece of craftsmanship, featuring an intricately detailed surface adorned with a combination of delicate paper quilling, sturdy metal wire, and precision laser-cut pieces. Modern Lamp-Coffee Table by Amal Ali

This modern lamp-coffee table is a stunning example of the versatility and ingenuity of modern design. This piece seamlessly blends form and function to create a piece that is both visually striking and practical. As a lamp, this piece emits a warm and inviting glow that adds ambiance to any room. As a coffee table, it serves as a sturdy and reliable surface for drinks, snacks, or other items.

Upcycled Cowboy Chap by Hanae Barnett

These upcycled leather cowboy chaps are a stunning example of the transformative power of creativity and innovation. Originally thrifted from Dallas, Texas, these chaps have been given a new lease on life through the skill and imagination of a talented artist. Inspired by the iconic wardrobe of Suki in the blockbuster hit "Fast and Furious", these chaps have been transformed into a work of art that seamlessly blends Texan tradition with Hollywood glamour.

Flight of the Conchords by Olyvia Hanken-Arlen

This blanket is dedicated to all of the set dressers that put hours of work into a prop that ultimately nobody notices. I noticed. This is a replica of a quilt occasionally shown on-screen in Flight of The Conchords (2007-2009), a short lived sitcom about New Zealand’s 4th most popular parody duo. Crocheted with acrylic yarn, 4.5mm hook, and minimal experience.

Falling into Oblivion by Hayley Gee

This is a pokemon terrarium made for Azurill. With a pond falling into a hot glue waterfall, Azurill sits on a stick found from outside. The 3D printer was used to make the pokeball and the pokemon and the laser cutter was used for the stand to hold the whole terrarium up.

Photographic Image Comparison by Alex Leung

A 1:1 scale model comparison of photographic image sizes. This is designed to help people visualize just how different camera image sizes can be. From the small APS-C DSLR cameras you may have at home to the behemoth of a 8x10 landscape camera you grandfather may have used.

The Art of Fluidity and Color by Nicole Zhu

The acrylic pour is a contemporary art technique that has captured the attention of artists and art enthusiasts alike with its mesmerizing effect of fluidity and color. This process involves mixing acrylic paint with a specialized pouring medium, resulting in a flowing consistency that allows for the creation of captivating and dynamic patterns on a canvas or other surface.

3D Printer Comparison Board by Louis Grelot

Wall-board presenting the capabilities of the Foundry's three 3D printers: Prusa/Ultimaker, Form Lab and Stratasys. Parts are attached to the board using velcro, feel free to detach and examine them.

Memories of Spain by Trae James

This collection of laser-cut vector images is a fusion of traditional and modern art techniques. The artist, inspired by their time studying abroad in Spain, has transformed their photography into a series of meticulously crafted vector images using Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator.

Woodshop Materials Basket by Oscar Woodyatt

A convenient basket used for storing cans of spray paint and bottles of wood glue in the woodshop. Emblazoned with a laser cut Foundry logo.

Teenage Witchcraft by Bri Hughes

Small bedroom created using laser cutter, sewing machine, wood shop and more. The space was initially 3D modeled using Onshape then each individual part was transferred to Adobe Illustrator in order to be cut out on the laser cutter. The room was then decorated using popsicle sticks and small repurposed objects.

Bralette Body Jewelry by Grace Fang

Two bralette body jewelry pieces, one gold and one silver. The silver is made with curb chain, filigree, faux pearl, 6mm jump rings, and lobster clasps. The gold is made with link chain, 6mm jump rings, a rhinestone charm, and lobster clasps. Both are made using chain nose pliers and flat nose pliers.

Star Earmuffs by Destiny Villalobos

Made with a 3D-printed headband, fabric, and stuffing, these hand sewed earmuffs are perfect for looking stylish in the cold weather.

Portrait Through String and Nails by Rafaela Wanderly

This stunning piece of string art is a true masterpiece of technique and skill, capturing the essence of the artist in a way that is both striking and unforgettable. Each nail and strand of thread is carefully placed, with every detail meticulously captured to create a piece that is both visually stunning and emotionally evocative.

The Journey of a Pair of Levi's by Angel Hill

Thrifted, spray painted, and upcycled. An unfortunate malfunctioning of the spray can left a massive white blot on the right leg. Instead of giving up, the artist turned this setback into an opportunity, using fabric paint to create additional details that transformed the jeans into a one-of-a-kind work of art.

Blackout Poetry by Christina Crochetiere

A collection of blackout poetry from Christina's teen years. Initially created only with Sharpie and pages out of books and newspapers, they have been adjusted and polished; remade into laser-cut plaques for a cleaner, more professional finish.

Paint Pour Artwork by Nitisha Iyer

Piece made by pouring acrylic paints in the style of abstract fluid art. Artwork combines controlled marble and dutch pour techniques to give a retro 80s feel.
